Before I got a Ring Pro, I had a traditional doorbell. It served its purpose, and I never imagined that I would need a doorbell that did more than alert me when someone was at the door.

That was until I left for a brief vacation for two weeks with my family, only to come back to a burglarized home.

My neighborhood has always been a safe place, so I never really worried about burglars. I had lived there for three years and never heard of a burglary case.

I also had an alarm system installed in my house just in case, so I was ascertained that my home was safe for the two weeks we’d be gone.

After a relaxing two weeks, my family and I went back home, ready to get back to our usual routines. We knew something was wrong when my husband went to unlock the front door but found that it was already open.

A step inside the living room, and it registered what had happened while we were away. Our plasma was gone from the living room and the microwave from the kitchen.

A quick search of the bedrooms showed that the drawers had been ransacked and cash, jewelry, and other valuables were gone.

We’d been robbed, but we couldn’t understand why we never got an alert from our alarm system. We reported the case to the police, and we discovered that the burglars were able to disable the alarm system.

I never once imagined that the system that we had put in place to protect our home was actually so useless. If it could so easily be tampered with, then what was the use of having it in the first place?

With the Ring Pro, you get a high-resolution view and can clearly make out the faces of people who come to the front door.

The fact that I can get a live feed of the video recording is what attracted me to this doorbell in the first place. Whether you’re home or not, it allows you to see who appears at your door.

The doorbell has a field of view of 160° horizontal and 90° vertical. When installed at the front door, these angles mean that you can see who comes up your driveway and to your door.

For a front door doorbell, this is an ideal field of view. If you place it correctly, you can see if someone wanders around your porch and looks into your windows – something that a burglar is bound to do.

But, the high definition video feed is not what makes the Ring Doorbell so essential. While this is a vital part of how it works, the second feature that we’ll look at makes it so much more useful.

Two-Way Audio

When most daytime burglars appear at a target house, they always knock on the door or ring the doorbell. This is their way of making sure that no one is at home so that they can go ahead and a break-in.

But, if anyone responds, they’ll make an excuse about why they’re at your door then disappear.

However, it requires a minimum upload speed of 1mbps to work well. A speed of 2mbps allows it to perform optimally.

So, if your home Wi-Fi is unable to provide such a connection, you’ll need to make arrangements to ensure that it’s strong enough. You can get a Ring Wi-Fi extender that works well with the doorbell to ensure that you never lose connectivity.

With a good Wi-Fi connection, you’ll be able to get timely notifications and see the video in HD quality and get crisp audio to and fro.

While the original Ring doorbell operated at 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, this Pro version is 2.4GHZ/5GHZ. This provides better speed for faster communication of activities happening at your front door.

Clear Night Vision

And if at any time you wish to change its appearance, all you have to do is interchange your existing faceplate with a different one.

Ring Protect Service

Ring provides Ring Protect, which is a cloud-recording service that allows you to watch past video feeds and share them with friends and family.

This is an optional service that you can decide to get when you open your Ring account. All-new Ring users get a 30-day free trial period in which they can use the cloud recording service without paying anything.

After this, you can decide whether to keep your subscription or not. If you keep it, you’ll pay around $30/year.

Your Ring Pro doorbell will still work optimally even if you don’t get this service. However, you’ll not be able to review what you missed in case you’re unable to attend to a notification instantly.

Ring Protect is a good alternative for homeowners who want to see who came to their home at times when they couldn’t check their live feeds. It also allows you to save and share feeds with others.

Some users find having to pay for a cloud recording service to be inconvenient and wish that it was possible to save feeds on their computers. Unfortunately, this is not available with Ring Pro.

How to Install the Ring Video Doorbell Pro

The Ring Pro box comes with everything that you need to install the doorbell. This includes:

Installing the Ring Pro can take about 15 minutes. It can be hardwired to the existing house electrical doorbell system or get powered using a Ring plugin adapter.

It requires a transformer for a successful installation, but this is not included in the box. It’s important that you look for the appropriate transformer, since getting the wrong one can affect your doorbell’s performance.

The Retrofit plate allows you to upgrade your doorbell if you’ve been using the original Ring doorbell. With this plate, you can use the faceplates that come in the box.

If you’re installing the doorbell on stone or brick, you’ll find a drill bit in the box that’s included for this situation. All you’ll need to do is get a drill and continue with the installation.
